| The Making of a Cannon (a photo diary) | |
|
Pictured below are some photos of the
process used in making the carriage and mount for the cannon.
Here is the barrel being fitted to a mock-up of the carriage that will be made from poplar wood. |

Cannon trunnion parts:
1) The (2) pieces of tubing
that are cut 3-1/8" lg. will be the trunnion sleeves. Machine the i.d.
to match the trunnion o.d. (2.32" bore) on the cannon as-is.
2) Machine the (2) 1/2" thick
plugs o.d. down to match the i.d. of the sleeves. Then weld the plugs
into the 3-1/8" lg. sleeves.
3) Machine the trunnion
sleeves o.d.
2-1/16" from the plug end to the open end of the sleeve. This
will then leave a major diameter on the remaining part of the sleeve
to help retain the cannon barrel into the center of the carriage.
4) Then finally bore the i.d.
of the larger (longer tube) in the back ground to be machined for the
(2) trunnion caps to hold the barrel into the carriage.
